A beautiful setting, an energy-efficient lifestyle and house that was spatially and visually exciting and stimulating – these were the key ingredients of the brief set by the client who owns a vineyard in Oxford’s greenbelt.
The house is conceived as a series of spaces around the old walled garden on the edge of the vineyard, giving both privacy and stunning views. A south-facing conservatory makes the most of the sun providing heat in winter with a bris soleil to shade it from the summer sun. The house is naturally ventilated and cooled with night air cooling the fabric and reducing daytime temperatures.
The conservatory provides visual delight all year round, changing with the day and with the seasons, and the whole house opens up in summer to embrace the garden.
Our sensitive design approach led to a successful planning application – meeting the aspirations of both the client and the planners and went on to win an award for outstanding design by the Vale of the White Horse.
